The Book of Mormon Returns to Brisbane: A Second Coming at QPAC

The numbers alone tell a story. The Book of Mormon has set house records at 27 theatres across the United States. It broke sales records at New York's Eugene O'Neill Theatre more than 50 times. Its London production holds the record for the highest single day of sales in West End history. And in Australia, its 2015 Melbourne premiere broke the record for the highest-selling on-sale period of any production in the Princess Theatre's 159-year history, also taking home the Helpmann Award for Best Musical.

The show's most recent Melbourne season — which closed on 19 July 2026 ahead of the Brisbane transfer — sold nearly 230,000 tickets and set a new record for the most tickets sold in a single day at the Princess Theatre in the last five years.

Now it is playing at QPAC's Glasshouse Theatre, where it runs through to 4 October 2026.

The Creators

The Book of Mormon features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone. Parker and Matt Stone are the creators of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning television show South Park, now in its 27th season, and the feature films South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and Team America: World Police.

Robert Lopez co-created the Broadway musical Avenue Q and co-wrote the songs for Disney's Frozen and Coco. He is the first person ever to achieve a double 'EGOT,' winning at least two each of the four major entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

The production is co-directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw and Parker. Nicholaw's Broadway and West End credits include Disney's Aladdin, Dreamgirls, Mean Girls, Monty Python's Spamalot, The Prom and The Drowsy Chaperone.

The Company

The 2026 Australian cast includes Sean Johnston (Hairspray) as Elder Price and Nick Cox (Beauty and the Beast) as Elder Cunningham. They are joined by Paris Leveque, making her professional debut as Nabulungi; Tom Struik (Sister Act the Musical) as Elder McKinley; Simbarashe Matshe (Filthy Business) as Mafala Hatimbi; Augie Tchantcho, reprising his role as The General; and Matthew Hamilton (Tina – The Tina Turner Musical) as Mission President.

The Reception

The critical reception speaks for itself. The New York Times calls it "the best musical of this century." The Sydney Morning Herald: "Praise be! Mormons' second coming is a blasphemous delight." Time Out Sydney describes a "'did they really just say that?' musical" that "will have you snort laughing." The Scoop calls it "the funniest, filthiest and most gloriously fearless musical ever to hit the Australian stage." Sydney Arts Guide: "Absolutely everything about and everyone in this show is brilliant." The Plus Ones calls it "the best-written opening number in musical theatre history."

Behind the Scenes

The production's design credits are extensive. Set design is by three-time Tony Award winner Scott Pask. Costume design is by two-time Tony Award winner Ann Roth. Lighting design is by five-time Tony Award winner Brian MacDevitt. Sound design is by two-time Tony Award winner Brian Ronan. Orchestrations are by Tony Award winner Larry Hochman and two-time Tony Award winner Stephen Oremus, who also provides music direction and vocal arrangements.

The Book of Mormon is produced in Australia by Anne Garefino, Important Musicals and Suzanne Jones for JONES Theatrical Group. Jones also currently has Pretty Woman: The Musical and Mrs. Doubtfire – The Musical in the Australian market.
